Saying farewell is always hard, whether it’s to your favorite character or favorite player. But every good actor or player deserves a proper farewell and to be treated well in the end. It’s hard to see the main character of a series or the main player of a club football team treated badly and forced to leave.
Writing this article reminds me of how Messi was treated at the end of his Barcelona career, and similarly, Cristiano at Real Madrid.
NBC’s new CEO, Mr. Greenblatt, was not a fan of The Office and Michael Scott’s character, so he decided not to renew the character with Steve Carell, who was playing Michael Scott. His contract with NBC was for 7 years, but Steve Carell wanted to renew it, which didn’t happen.
Despite not renewing the contract, NBC gave the green light to make a farewell episode for Michael and made an exception to exceed the runtime of that episode.
The “Goodbye Michael” episode aired on April 28, 2011. Its IMDb rating of 9.8 is one of the highest in the TV show industry.
The episode was more than a TV series episode for fans of The Office. Though Michael told his colleagues he would leave the next day, it was actually his last day in the office. He made a list and wanted to say goodbye to all of his friends/colleagues. The below conversation between Michael and Creed has melted the hearts of millions of fans.
He told the party planning committee to buy the vanilla ice cream that everybody likes in the office instead of his favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream, showing his care for his friends. He said goodbye to all of his friends in The Office in his own way, but below are some very emotional conversations.

Jim Halpert
Michael managed to fool everybody in the office about his leaving the next day, except for Jim. Jim later understood in the conference room that Michael was leaving today. Their conversation was an unspoken farewell, but it was the most touching goodbye. Jim admitted that Michael was the best boss he ever had, and both tried hard to hold back tears.
Pam Beesly
Pam almost missed saying goodbye to Michael but later met him at the airport to say goodbye and hug. The mic was removed, so the conversation was muted, but it was a goodbye between two friends who supported each other in their ups and downs. Obviously, Michael said goodbye to her in his own sarcastic way, as Pam later told in front of the camera that Michael was hoping to get an upgrade as an award member in Colorado.
Dwight Schrute
Dwight’s relationship with Michael was very special. He always considered Michael his boss, mentor, friend, colleague, and role model. At the start of the episode, he was disappointed because the recommendation letter had not been written by Michael. But later, Michael surprised him with a heartfelt recommendation letter. He got very emotional while reading this, as Michael mentioned him as a good sales executive, as a leader, as a man, and as a friend.
Later, they played paintball, which shows the deep friendship between them.
Erin Hannon
Erin sees Michael as a father figure and gets advice about her personal life. He encourages her to be happy and tells her that she will find her way in life. It is a moment that highlights Michael’s paternal side.
Andy Bernard
When Michael gave his 10 most important clients’ contacts to Andy, everyone in the office was surprised, including Andy. As he was not the good salesman in the office. But Michael kept faith in him and believed he had the potential to be a good salesman. It shows the leadership quality of Michael Scott as a Regional Manager.
We have seen in Michael’s childhood video that he wanted to get married, have 100 kids, and make friends with them. As Michael is getting older, he managed to make a few friends in the office but not married yet.
So when he had the chance to marry Holly Flax and begin a new family, he didn’t want to miss the chance despite having to quit his job, leave his friends, and leave Scranton City. So he decided to move back to Colorado with Holly.
In the end, Michael may have left the building of Dunder Mifflin, but he will always be in the hearts of his friends in the office and his fans.
